Li Xiangdong
Dong (李湘东) is a Chinese artist born in Shenzhen. He is a driver, traveler, and artist whose creative practice centers on the act of movement as a means of connecting with the world. For Dong, mobility is not merely a form of transit, but a bodily strategy for crossing geographic, cultural, and social boundaries. He treats movement as a performative and experimental mode of social engagement—one that allows him to enter unfamiliar spaces, forge temporary relationships, and reflect on how identity is continuously shaped through motion.
His work spans photography, installation, painting, and performance, often grounded in self-directed journeys that trace routes of exploration and encounter. These projects investigate how individuals form temporary connections in unfamiliar environments, and how such interactions are shaped by miscommunication, uncertainty, and cultural difference. For Dong, misunderstanding is not simply a failure of communication, but a generative space—one that reveals the fragility of human connection while offering possibilities for renewed understanding and knowledge-making.
In a contemporary world shaped by rapid mobility and structural fragmentation, Dong uses sustained movement and embodied presence to question the boundaries of belonging, the limits of language, the multiplicity of identity, and the conditions of coexistence in cross-cultural settings. Within this shifting terrain, he poses a persistent question: As we continue to move, what forms of memory, history, and connection do we carry with us? And how are these elements amplified, misread, forgotten, or transformed through the act of moving?
